Mechanically it is a textbook RAG flow. Queries fan out to candidate documents via Perplexity's own crawler (PerplexityBot) and partner search data, the model composes an answer grounded in those documents, and each sentence carries a clickable [1][2] citation. The cited domain set is more stable across reruns than on most other surfaces, which is why GEO teams often treat Perplexity as the reference for measuring citation rate.
What marketers love about Perplexity is that the citation distribution is right there in the open. Run a category prompt 50 times and you can see exactly which domains the engine treats as trustworthy.
