Answer Engine

Also known as답변 엔진Answering Search

In one line

An answer engine is a search system that returns the answer itself — usually a single cited paragraph — instead of a list of links. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are the textbook examples.

Going deeper

The phrase 'answer engine' is positioned deliberately against 'search engine'. A search engine ranks candidate links; an answer engine reads those candidates and writes a single paragraph in reply. Perplexity popularised the term by branding itself this way.

For marketers, answer engines are the home turf of AEO. Almost all of your exposure depends on two questions: how is your brand phrased inside that single paragraph, and is your domain in the citation list under it?

A useful caveat: answer engines are not always right. They can cite the wrong source or get facts wrong. The job is two-sided — earn citations, and also monitor how the engine might be misdescribing you.
