Alt Text
In one line
Alt text is the text alternative for an image — used when the image can't render and read aloud by screen readers — and it affects both accessibility and image search visibility.
Going deeper
Alt text is the short description in `<img alt="...">`. It's read aloud by screen readers, shown when an image fails to load, and treated as an essential accessibility element under WCAG.
On the SEO side, it's the primary signal for Google Image Search and a secondary signal for normal page ranking. Stuffing keywords backfires; one natural sentence describing the image is enough.
Alt text is regaining importance as AI and accessibility tooling get smarter. Multimodal LLMs can analyse images directly, but explicit alt text reliably improves citation and summary accuracy on top of that.
