A brand mention is when your brand name appears in the body of an AI answer, regardless of whether your domain is in the citation cards. It is common to see something like 'tools such as X' in the prose while X is nowhere in the source list.
For marketers it is awareness without a click and without a citation. Once a user sees the name, they can search for it or type the URL directly. That is why mention share is worth tracking alongside citation rate, not in place of it.
Mentions are not always good news. Your brand can show up as a negative comparison or attached to a wrong fact. Always pair the count with a quick read of the context.
