The Disavow Tool tells Google to ignore specific backlinks when evaluating your site. You upload a domain-level or URL-level list as a text file in Search Console. It used to be a normal hygiene task; current Google guidance pushes it toward being a last-resort tool.
Since Google publicly said most sites do not need to disavow, the field has shifted to using it sparingly. The two clear cases that remain are when you have an actual Manual Action to clean up, and when you are demonstrably under a negative-SEO attack with an abnormal spike in junk links.
It is not a GEO tool either. LLMs do not parse disavow files when evaluating sources — they form their own authority signals. Keeping disavow scoped strictly to 'inside Google Search evaluation' makes the decision much simpler.
