Google Algorithm

In one line

Google's algorithm is the layered system of hundreds of ranking signals that decides what shows up where in the SERP — periodically reshaped by core and topic-specific updates.

Going deeper

Google's algorithm is not one thing — it is a layered system of hundreds of ranking signals and supporting subsystems. Core updates, spam updates and the helpful-content system get announced and revised on a regular cadence.

There's no real way to optimise the algorithm directly. The realistic loop is to monitor how rankings shifted after each core update and tune content quality, E-E-A-T signals and the technical baseline against the direction the guidelines are pointing.

Under GEO, 'what shows up in AI Overviews' has been absorbed into the algorithm too. It is sometimes discussed as a separate system, but it is more accurately read as a synthesis layer on top of the existing ranking engine, not a parallel one.
