Position Zero
In one line
Position zero is the answer box that appears above the regular #1 result — the featured-snippet slot that loses you some clicks but earns disproportionate brand exposure.
Going deeper
Position zero is the answer box that sits above the normal first result — featured snippets, definition boxes, How-to cards. It's the first thing a user's eyes land on.
Winning position zero doesn't always mean more clicks. If your answer fully resolves the query in the box, you can actually lose clicks to a zero-click outcome. The reason teams still chase it is brand weight — being the answer punches well above a regular #1.
GEO makes the slot more interesting. Google increasingly fills the same real estate with an AI Overview, so the 'answer box' is no longer one site quoted verbatim — it's a synthesis across sources. Content aimed at position zero now has to be designed to win an AI Overview citation at the same time.
