Activation Rate

Also known asActivation활성화율

In one line

Activation rate is the share of new signups who reach a defined 'first value' moment shortly after joining — the cleanest read on onboarding quality.

Going deeper

Activation rate is the share of new signups who hit a defined 'first value' action within a short window. Slack's 2,000-message threshold, Facebook's seven friends in ten days and Notion's first-page-created event are the canonical examples.

Most frameworks place Activation in the second slot of AARRR, but in practice it is usually the highest-leverage step. Lifting activation a few points tends to pay back better than scaling the top of the funnel.

The definition is product-specific, and getting it wrong shows up immediately. If you pick the wrong action, activation rises while retention stays flat — a clear sign the metric isn't tied to real value. The right starting point is usually a data-driven hunt for the action most correlated with long-term retention.
