In one line

The primary keyword is the single search term a page is built around — the one that the title, H1 and meta description should all consistently point to.

Going deeper

The primary keyword is the one search term a single page is meant to win. Secondary terms and LSI variants can ride along, but the centre of gravity should sit on one keyword. Trying to chase too many at once is how teams end up with keyword cannibalization, where two pages compete with each other and neither reaches page one.

Picking the primary is a triangulation between search volume, competition and search intent. High volume is useless if the intent does not match — you get traffic but no conversions. The better play is usually the mid-volume term whose intent maps cleanly onto your page, not the biggest term in the category.

Naming a primary keyword pays off in AI search too. LLMs lean toward content whose subject can be summarised in one line, so a tightly scoped page tends to get cited more often than a sprawling one that tries to be everything.
