In one line

AI Slop is a derogatory term for low-quality, mass-produced AI content — the exact category that search engines and LLMs are actively trying to filter out.

Going deeper

AI Slop is a derogatory label for low-quality content churned out at volume with AI. The term spread quickly through journalism and content circles and gets used for 'unedited LLM output published as an article' or 'keyword-stuffed pages with nothing original to say'.

For GEO this is more than a reputation problem — slop is the category that drops out of citation pools fastest. Search engines and LLMs are clearly raising the bar on factual specificity, originality and self-contained passages, so volume pages can earn a traffic spike but they do not accumulate as durable citation assets.

What marketers actually use the term for is a bar to clear. The working test is roughly three questions: (1) does the piece add information someone could not get from existing pages, (2) are sources and evidence attached, (3) does any single paragraph stand on its own? Three yeses keep you out of the slop bucket.
