Keyword ranking is the position your page holds for a given query in search results — the most intuitive single metric for tracking SEO progress over time.

Keyword ranking is just where your page sits in the results for a given query. Tools like Ahrefs, Semrush and Naver Search Advisor track it daily, and it's still the single most quoted number in any SEO report.
Don't run on average rank alone, though. A #1 with an AI Overview on top of it earns very different CTR from a clean #1, and rankings split across mobile, desktop and local. Most teams now read ranking together with SERP-feature ownership rather than in isolation.
In AI search the metric blurs further. ChatGPT and Perplexity don't really have positions 1–10 — you're either cited or you aren't — so citation rate is increasingly tracked alongside ranking as a companion KPI.
